Spontaneous Scalarization and Boson Stars

چکیده

We study spontaneous scalarization in Scalar-Tensor boson stars. We find that scalarization does not occur in stars whose bosons have no self-interaction. We introduce a quartic self-interaction term into the boson Lagrangian and show that when this term is large, scalarization does occur. Strong self-interaction leads to a large value of the compactness (or sensitivity) of the boson star, a necessary condition for scalarization to occur, and we derive an analytical expression for computing the sensitivity of a boson star in Brans-Dicke theory from its mass and particle number. Finally we comment on how one can use the sensitivity of a star in any Scalar-Tensor theory to determine how its mass changes when it undergoes gravitational evolution. A decade ago, it was shown that a wide class of scalar-tensor theories can pass very restrictive weak field tests of gravity and yet exhibit non-perturbative strong field deviations away from General Relativity. This phenomenon was called ‘Spontaneous Scalarization’ and causes the (Einstein frame) scalar field inside a neutron star to rapidly become inhomogeneous once the star’s mass increases ...

Charged Boson Stars and Vacuum Instabilities

We consider charged boson stars and study their effect on the structure of the vacuum. For very compact particle like “stars”, with constituent mass m∗ close to the Planck mass mP l, i.e. m 2 ∗ = O(αmP l), we argue that there is a limiting total electric charge Zc, which, primarily, is due to the formation of a pion condensate (Zc ≃ 0.5α−1e, where α is the fine structure constant and e is the e...

Angularly excited and interacting boson stars and Q-balls

We study angularly excited as well as interacting non-topological solitons, so-called Qballs and their gravitating counterparts, so-called boson stars in 3 + 1 dimensions. Q-balls and boson stars carry a non-vanishing Noether charge and arise as solutions of complex scalar field models in a flat space-time background and coupled minimally to gravity, respectively. We present examples of interac...

A Numerical Study of Solitonic Boson Stars in General Relativity

In the wake of the recent detection of gravitational wave signal GW150914, we investigate whether GW150914 could have been produced by something other than a binary black hole system. Our proposed candidate is a binary system of solitonic boson stars. The choice of solitonic boson stars is due mainly to the structural properties of their ground states, as solitonic boson stars are capable of fo...
